Matsumoto is a hirajiro — a castle built on a plain rather than a hill, defended by triple moats instead of height — and its black lacquered walls gave it the name Crow Castle. It was sold for scrap in 1872 and saved by a local campaign led by a teacher, Ichikawa Ryōzō, who bought it back; the interior steps are original and brutally steep.
