Guimarães

Afonso Henriques was born in the castle here around 1109 and won the battle in 1128 that began Portuguese independence from León; a wall in the old town carries the words Aqui nasceu Portugal — Portugal was born here — in letters visible from the street. The centre is medieval, granite and unusually complete.
