Beirut

Beirut has been levelled by earthquake, invasion and war at least seven times, and the excavations in the centre after the 1975–90 civil war exposed Phoenician, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Crusader and Ottoman layers in the same trench. The 2020 port explosion, one of the largest non-nuclear blasts recorded, destroyed much of the eastern city again.
