Kaifeng was probably the largest city in the world around 1100, with a million people and a night market that stayed open — an innovation, since curfews were normal. The Yellow River has buried it repeatedly; the Song city lies six metres beneath the modern one, and archaeologists have found six cities stacked vertically on the same spot.
