Aleppo
The Covered Souk
Portrait
Aleppo rivals Damascus for age and was the northern terminus of the caravan routes, with a citadel on a mound occupied since the third millennium BC and a covered souk of thirteen kilometres. Much of the old city, including large stretches of that souk, was destroyed between 2012 and 2016; restoration of the Umayyad Mosque's minaret and the market rows has been under way since.
