Amman was Philadelphia to the Romans and Rabbath Ammon before that, and its citadel hill carries a Bronze Age wall, a Roman temple of Hercules, a Byzantine church and an Umayyad palace on the same summit. The city grew from a village of two thousand in 1900 to over four million, largely through waves of refugees, and the Roman theatre seats six thousand at the foot of the hill.
