Madurai has been inhabited for at least 2,500 years and is built in concentric rectangles around the Meenakshi temple, whose fourteen gopurams are covered in some thirty-three thousand painted sculptures. Every night the god Sundareswarar is carried in procession to his consort's chamber and returned at dawn — a rite performed without interruption for centuries.
