Jericho's stone tower and wall date to around 8000 BC, making them among the oldest known monumental structures anywhere — built by a settlement of a few hundred people who had only just stopped being nomads. The town sits 258 metres below sea level beside a spring that has never stopped flowing, which is why anyone was here at all.
