Luxor stands on ancient Thebes, and the concentration is unmatched: Karnak, the largest religious complex ever built, took two thousand years and thirty pharaohs; the Valley of the Kings holds sixty-three tombs on the west bank, where the dead were buried because the sun set there. Tutankhamun's tomb was found in 1922 with almost everything still in it.
