Anuradhapura
The Sacred Bo Tree
Portrait
Anuradhapura was the Sinhalese capital for over a millennium, and the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi was planted in 288 BC from a cutting of the tree the Buddha sat under — the oldest human-planted tree in the world with a recorded planting date, tended without interruption ever since. Its brick stupas rival the pyramids in volume, and the irrigation tanks around it still hold water.
