Luoyang
The Longmen Buddhas
Portrait
Luoyang was the eastern capital of imperial China for most of two millennia, and the Longmen grottoes cut into the limestone above the Yi river hold over 100,000 Buddhist statues carved between 493 and the Tang — the largest, Vairocana at seventeen metres, is said to bear the features of the Empress Wu Zetian who paid for it. The White Horse Temple of 68 AD is China's first Buddhist temple.
