Erbil

The Citadel Mound

Portrait

Erbil's citadel is a tell — an artificial mound built up from the debris of successive settlements — rising thirty metres above the plain and continuously inhabited for at least six thousand years, which makes it a candidate for the oldest continuously occupied site on earth. The Ottoman houses on top were emptied in 2007 for restoration, with one family kept in residence so the record of occupation would not break.
