Acre was the last crusader capital in the Holy Land, and when the Mamluks took it in 1291 they filled the Hospitaller quarter with rubble; the Ottomans built on top, sealing a complete Gothic city — refectory, halls, a tunnel to the port — which was excavated only from the 1990s. Above ground the walls held Napoleon off for two months in 1799.
