Rhodes Town
Street of the Knights
Portrait
The Knights Hospitaller held Rhodes from 1309 to 1522 and organised themselves by tongue — French, Spanish, Italian, German, English — each with an inn on the Street of the Knights, which survives almost unaltered. Suleiman took the island after a six-month siege and let the knights leave with honours; they went to Malta and built Valletta.
