Derbent
The Caspian Gate
Portrait
The Caucasus leaves a three-kilometre gap between mountain and sea at Derbent, and the Sasanians closed it in the sixth century with a fortress and two parallel walls running down into the water, so that no army could pass along the coast. The city inside is one of the oldest continuously inhabited in Russia, and its Juma mosque of 733 is among the oldest in the former Soviet Union.
