Byblos
The Oldest Harbour
Portrait
Byblos exported papyrus to Greece, and the Greek word for the material, and later for the book and the Bible itself, came from the town's own name. Its excavation shows a single mound with Neolithic huts, Phoenician temples, a Roman colonnade and a Crusader castle stacked on each other, and the fishing harbour below still works.
