Valletta
Baroque of the Knights
Portrait
After the Ottomans failed to take Malta in 1565, the Knights of St John built a new fortified capital on the peninsula between two harbours — laid out on a grid by an Italian military engineer, with bastions that made it one of the strongest positions in Europe and streets aligned to catch the sea breeze. It is one of the smallest capitals in the world and entirely walkable.
