Guanajuato produced a large share of the world's silver, and its river kept flooding the ravine the town is built in — so the flood tunnels were repurposed as roads, and cars now pass beneath the plazas while the surface stays for people. The 1810 storming of the granary, where the independence war effectively began, happened at the top of the hill.
