Chefchaouen

Founded in 1471 as a fortress against the Portuguese, Chefchaouen took in Jewish and Muslim refugees from Spain, and the blue wash is variously credited to them, to mosquito repellence and to tourism — the honest answer is that it spread in the twentieth century.
