The lake filled a glacial hollow, and on its single island stands a church where couples still ring a wishing bell after the groom carries the bride up ninety-nine steps. The only way across is a pletna, a flat-bottomed boat rowed standing by oarsmen from twenty-three families who have held the right since 1740.
