Rabat
The Quiet Capital
Portrait
The Almohads began a mosque here in 1195 meant to be the largest in the world and stopped when the sultan died four years later — the Hassan tower stands at half its planned height above a field of broken columns. France made Rabat the capital in 1912 to avoid favouring Fez or Marrakech, and it has stayed one, quiet and administrative.
