Portrait
Almost nothing survived the bombing of 1950–53, and the city was rebuilt on Soviet advice as a demonstration — wide axes, monumental blocks, and squares sized for parades of a hundred thousand. Visits are guided throughout and the itinerary is fixed; what a visitor sees is exactly what is intended to be seen, and understanding that is the only honest way to describe the place.
By permit Guided throughout on a fixed itinerary; independent movement is not possible.
