Katowice
Silesian Reinvention
Portrait
Katowice was the centre of Silesian coal and steel, and when the industry contracted the city put its money into culture — the Silesian Museum is built underground on a former mine site with the winding tower left standing, and the NOSPR concert hall next door has acoustics by Yasuhisa Toyota. Spodek, the flying-saucer arena of 1971, is the surviving emblem of the earlier era.
