Kraków was Poland's capital for five centuries, and the Wawel castle above the Vistula holds the tombs of its kings and the country's coronation cathedral; the market square laid out in 1257 is the largest medieval square in Europe. The city came through the war with its fabric intact, and the Jagiellonian University, founded 1364, taught Copernicus.
