German forces destroyed around eighty-five per cent of Warsaw after the 1944 uprising, razing the centre street by street on written orders, and the Poles rebuilt the old town from Bellotto's eighteenth-century vedute and surviving photographs — a reconstruction UNESCO listed precisely as an act of will rather than as authentic fabric.
