Twenty-Seven Buildings Left Standing
Portrait
Ten-metre waves came in on All Saints' Day 1755 and left twenty-seven buildings standing in the whole centre, while the parish church came down on the congregation and killed two hundred and twenty-seven. The town was rebuilt on the site but not on the plan, then lost half its people when the canneries closed between 1930 and 1960.
