Sagres

The School That Was Not There

Henry the Navigator's school of navigation at Sagres has no documents and no archaeology behind it: the first written mention is seventeenth-century, and the palace and observatory were added by a romantic historian in 1894. What the cape anchors instead is the earthquake of 1755, which began two hundred kilometres west-southwest of it.
