The Makaryev fair moved here in 1817 and became the largest in the Russian empire — where Persian, Central Asian and Chinese goods met European ones and where prices for the year were effectively set. The kremlin of 1511 has never been taken, and the city was closed to foreigners under the name Gorky until 1991, when Sakharov was exiled here.
