The Trinity Lavra
Sacred Cities
Portrait

Sergius of Radonezh founded the Trinity Lavra in 1337 in forest north of Moscow, and it became the spiritual centre of Russia — Andrei Rublev painted the Trinity icon for its cathedral, and the monastery withstood a sixteen-month Polish siege. It remained partly open through the Soviet period and is again the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church's academy.
