Jebel Fihrayn / Edge of the World
The Cliff over an Ancient Sea
permit required
Portrait
Ninety kilometres north-west of Riyadh the Tuwaiq escarpment breaks off in a cliff three hundred metres above a plain that was a seabed forty million years ago, and the view from the lip carries far enough that Saudis named it the Edge of the World. Go for sunset with a high-clearance vehicle and a guide, and walk out along the promontory where the rock narrows to a few metres.
By permit Reached only by unpaved track; a high-clearance vehicle and a guide are required, and there are no barriers at the edge.
