Muhammad emigrated here from Mecca in 622 — the year that begins the Islamic calendar — and is buried beneath the green dome of the Prophet's Mosque, which has been enlarged repeatedly and now holds over a million worshippers. Entry to the central area is restricted to Muslims, and the city is quieter and cooler than Mecca, with date palms in every direction.
Restricted by faith The central area is open to Muslims only.
