Robben Island

The Prison of the President
Cities of Memory
permit required · Gateway town: Cape Town
Portrait

Nelson Mandela spent eighteen of his twenty-seven years here in a cell three metres by two, working the lime quarry whose glare permanently damaged his eyes; five other prisoners from this island later served in South Africa's cabinet. The tours are led by former inmates, which changes what the visit is, and the ferry takes thirty minutes from the V&A Waterfront.
