Gyeongju was the capital of Silla for nearly a thousand years, and its royal tombs are grass mounds standing among the modern streets — over a hundred and fifty of them, some excavated to reveal gold crowns. Bulguksa temple and the Seokguram grotto above it, both from the eighth century, are the finest Buddhist architecture in Korea.
