Under the caliphate Córdoba may have held half a million people and a library of four hundred thousand volumes when Paris was a town; the Mezquita's forest of eight hundred columns was built from Roman and Visigothic spolia and later had a cathedral inserted into its middle, which Charles V regretted on seeing it. The patios of the old town are opened to the public each May.
