Ani

City of 1001 Churches
Lost Cities & RuinsBorder Cities
Gateway town: Kars
Portrait

Ani was a city of churches on the Silk Road until the Mongols took it in 1236 and an earthquake finished the work; today its cathedral and round churches stand in empty grassland with the Armenian border river in the gorge below. The isolation is total and part of the experience — there is no town, no shade and no sound but wind.
