The Louvre Abu Dhabi opened in 2017 beneath a dome perforated so that light falls through it in shifting patterns, and the Zayed National Museum followed onto the same island eight years later. Saadiyat lies a few hundred metres off the city and is joined to it by bridges, which leaves it a district of Abu Dhabi in geography and a destination in its own right in practice.
