In 1209 Oxford scholars fled a town riot in which two of their number were hanged, settled in a fenland market town, and founded a rival that has since produced more Nobel laureates than most countries. The colleges own the meadows behind them, which is why the Backs remain grazed and empty in the middle of a city, and punting on the Cam is done standing on the flat end, unlike Oxford.
