Inverness sits where the Ness leaves the loch, at the northern end of the Great Glen — a fault line that splits Scotland diagonally and holds four lochs in a row. Loch Ness contains more fresh water than all the lakes of England and Wales together, which is part of why the monster has never been definitively ruled out, and Culloden battlefield is eight kilometres east.
