St Ives
The Painters' Light
Portrait
The light here — reflected off water on three sides — brought Whistler and Sickert in 1884, and by the 1940s Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo had made St Ives the centre of British abstraction. Hepworth's studio and garden are kept as she left them in 1975, and Tate St Ives sits above the beach where the pilchard industry used to work.
