Memphis
Beale Street Blues
Portrait
Sam Phillips recorded Howlin' Wolf, B.B. King and then Elvis Presley at Sun Studio on Union Avenue, a room barely larger than a garage, and a decade later Stax on McLemore Avenue produced Otis Redding and Booker T. with an integrated house band in a segregated city. Beale Street was the black commercial and musical centre that made both possible.
