Williamsburg
The Colonial Stage
Portrait
Williamsburg was Virginia's capital until 1780 and then declined into a village; from 1926 John D. Rockefeller Jr funded the reconstruction of 88 original buildings and the rebuilding of several hundred more on their foundations, creating the model for living history museums. Staff in period dress work the trades, and the debate about what such reconstruction leaves out — slavery above all — has reshaped the programme since the 1980s.
