The Lateran Treaty of 1929 settled sixty years of dispute by creating a state of forty-four hectares with about eight hundred residents, its own post office, army of Swiss Guards and no income tax. St Peter's took 120 years and the work of Bramante, Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini; the Sistine ceiling was painted by a sculptor who insisted he was not a painter.
