Butrint
Theatre in the Lagoon
Gateway town: Sarandë
Portrait
Butrint was continuously occupied for two and a half thousand years and abandoned to malaria in the Middle Ages, which is why a Greek theatre, Roman baths, a baptistery mosaic and a Venetian tower stand within a ten-minute walk of each other. The site is a peninsula in a lagoon: take the cable ferry across for the view back, and go early when the water is still.
