In 1952 an archaeologist lifted a slab in the Temple of the Inscriptions and found a staircase down to the sarcophagus of Pakal, who ruled Palenque for sixty-eight years and had the descent built into the pyramid during his lifetime. Come at opening when mist still hangs in the forest, and walk out through the eastern group where the site dissolves into jungle and howler monkeys.
