The Gold Coast runs fifty-seven kilometres of surf beach south of Brisbane and grew from a string of holiday shacks into Australia's sixth-largest city, with a skyline that casts a shadow over the sand each afternoon in winter. Surfers Paradise took its name from a hotel, and the point breaks at Snapper Rocks produce some of the longest rides in the world.
