Cancún

Mexico's government ran an analysis in the late 1960s to find the best site for a purpose-built resort, and the answer was a sandbar with three fishermen on it — construction began in 1970, and Cancún now receives more visitors than any other city in Mexico. The Maya sites of Tulum and Chichén Itzá are the reason many people extend the trip inland.
