Hobart was founded as a penal settlement in 1804 and is Australia's second-oldest capital, with sandstone warehouses at Salamanca built by convict labour; Mount Wellington rises 1,271 metres directly behind it and often has snow while the town does not. MONA, a private museum dug into a cliff north of the city, is funded by a professional gambler and is the strangest institution in Australian art.
