Ascona

A group of vegetarians, theosophists and anarchists founded a colony on the hill above Ascona in 1900 called Monte Verità — truth mountain — and over three decades it drew Hesse, Jung, Isadora Duncan and Bakunin's successors, effectively inventing the alternative lifestyle. The village below is Swiss Italian, sits on Lake Maggiore, and holds a jazz festival each summer.
