Perth is closer to Jakarta than to Sydney, with two thousand kilometres of desert between it and the next city of any size, and that isolation produced a place that looks inward and outdoors at once. Swim at Cottesloe, ferry over to Fremantle for the port and the markets, and drive north for the Pinnacles or south for Margaret River wine.
