Calgary sits where the prairie meets the Rocky Mountain foothills, built and rebuilt by oil money, and each July the Stampede fills it with rodeo, chuckwagon racing and a city-wide costume change. Come for the Stampede or come for the mountains — Banff is ninety minutes west, and the city works best as the practical half of that pairing.
